Sydney Siege

On December 15, 2014, seventeen staff members and customers were held hostage in the Lindt Cafe in Sydney, Australia. The incident began when witnesses saw a man with a bag and gun walk into the chocolate shop.

Lindt said about ten employees and thirty customers were thought to be inside at the time. Nearby offices were evacuated and police asked people to remain indoors and away from open windows.

The gunman, named as Man Haron Monis, forced some of the hostages to hold up a black Islamic banner at the window of the cafe, which reads: "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger."

Television footage during the siege showed distressed people inside the cafe pressing flags to the window. Several hostages managed to flee from the building shortly after 2:00 local time on Tuesday.

With the end of the sixteen-hour siege at 2:48 as the cafe was stormed by commandos, two of the hostages were found dead: Lindt cafe manager Tori Johnson, 34 and lawyer Katrina Dawson, 38. The gunman did not survive the siege.

Monis, already well-known to Australian police, was on bail for being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife. He also faced more than 40 sexual and indecent assault charges, and has been convicted of sending offensive letters to the families of deceased Australian soldiers. Monis received political asylum in Australia in 1996 and was on bail facing a number of charges.

The devastation caused by the deaths of the two hostages created a ripple of compassion and empathy in the Australian community, as well as concern for the general safety of others. Unsurprisingly, there also has been a renewed burst of Islamophobia due to the actions of one jihadist individual. Hopefully, no hate crimes will ensue this devastating event.

The Yearly Ritual Channeling of my Hard-Earned Funds Towards Christmas Presents

(Co-written with Daniela)

We both love Christmas, but what stresses us out most about the holiday season is the prospect of shopping for gifts. The impending holiday provides a strict deadline for us to acquire the perfect presents for our friends and family.

Even though we love and are very close with the people for whom we are searching for gifts to give, we have the hardest time picking out appropriate presents that they would appreciate.

With seven friends in common, we struggle to pool together enough money to satisfy the demands of our high maintenance squad.

For everything to come out perfectly we must correctly time our online purchases so that they arrive at our homes in a timely manner for us to be able to wrap them up properly.

As we approach winter break, the desperation to get a good deal on purchases heightens, leading to the long lines of Black Friday sales. Black Friday sales tend to involve extreme amounts of glaring and shoving, and thus are not pleasant. But this is the only way to find a present to appease the disastrous mayhem crew I swing with. I swear, they thrive off of money, mishaps, and pure chaos.

Well, to say the least, purchasing presents for Daniela is such a thankless labor. She's so demanding and a complete nightmare. We're a dream team duo.

All in all, despite the holidays being an absolutely draining experience, it's a task I'm willing to take up to repay my thanks to the cool folks who are my friends.

God forbid any of them should find this article. They can't know I said nice things about them.

Stop Giving Out Banana and Grape Flavored Candy 2k14

A thrilling narrative co-written by fellow skeleton warrior Daniela at a completely ungodly hour.

6:07 pm

We met up with four other friends at the mall area. When we arrived we saw that Yogurtland was completely empty. We wondered what was wrong, and it turned out someone had robbed the bank next to it. Daniela talked to a security guard, who was really nice. He said some guy in a mask had gone in and tried to rob the bank. He didn’t know much since they dismissed him and let the police take care of it, but he did tell us that this was only his third week working on the job. He seemed agitated by the events that had occurred and was eager to go home.

6:40 pm

Later we headed towards the residential quarter and out of the mall area. On our way there, two of our friends encountered a really close-to-death experience. They were walking a couple feet ahead of us and were crossing the street when a car driving really fast and almost hit them. The driver didn’t stop at the stop sign and my two friends weren’t looking so they almost got hit. It was really scary but luckily we were all able to walk away from it.

We have this friend and she always wears the same costume every year. Every year it gets smaller, while she gets taller. She’s worn the same Belle dress every Halloween for eighty-four years. Look at her. Scandalous, the neighbors say.

7:22 pm

This kid, he’s probably like eight, he was walking to the door of some house to get candy. While we were walking out, he told her, “Hey, it’s Booty and the Beast.” But he was a small child and?? Why???

7:39 pm

We walked up the driveway of a house and it was dark and there was a very large and furry spider. It was a FAKE, as fake as my love for math, spider but it scared my friends in front of me, and they punched Daniela in the face.

8:11 pm

Near the school that is being built next to Maddox Park, there was this group of guys, and they looked like they were in a gang. They were standing with a nice lady who told us not to be intimidated by the men. When I was walking away, I could hear them whispering really loudly, “Ah, look at that girl with the baseball bat, she looks like she could mess someone up with it.” I was really flattered. I aim to inspire fear and impress.

8:56 pm

Then Daniela has these neighbors who ALWAYS, she doesn't know why, but they like to park in front of her house even though they live five houses away. So when we walked up to their house she was very pleasantly surprised to see that they had left a bowl of candy in front of their house. It was full and it was late so we figured it’d be okay if we took all the candy since there didn't seem to be anyone else trick-or-treating. She really likes Yorks, and she made sure to emphasize the fact that she hadn't eaten one in eighty-four years. She took approximately seventeen Yorks, and her bag got pretty heavy. She thinks her neighbors redeemed themselves today, though perhaps involuntarily.

I just want to eat my Twix

What the hell is going on. Did I just pass out for six hours
Help

3:37 pm

We are here to cleanse this earth of artificially-flavored grape and banana candy. Rest in pieces, you disgusting letdown of a wad of candy. Happy Halloween.

2014 Hong Kong Protests - Umbrella Movement

The 2014 Hong Kong protests, also known as the Umbrella Movement or Umbrella Revolution, began in September 2014 when protesters in Hong Kong protested outside the government headquarters and occupied several major city intersections after the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPCSC) announced its decision on proposed electoral reform.

The protests are being held in order to achieve universal suffrage in Hong Kong. Although democracy had been promised for 2017 in 2008, China announced this August that Hong Kong citizens would only be able to vote from a pool of 2-3 specially selected candidates, all of whom would definitely have pro-China sentiments.

The protesters are largely made up of university students participating in a peaceful boycott of classes. Although the protests remain peaceful, police now are using use tear gas and have brought out long guns loaded with rubber bullets. There have been reports of cell phone receptions being cut in the protest area so that information cannot be shared.

At first, the protest began with only citizens sitting quietly in a silent protest. However, at 7:00 in the morning the next day, policemen stormed into the public square and began clearing out the area by force, dragging youngsters out violently, injuring many of them. Policemen have also been witnessed to beating youngsters without reason, and using high-concentration, anti-riot pepper spray on civilians who are merely attempting to protect themselves.

Protesting civilians who remained on the streets overnight are wearing plastic wraps and raincoats under 30 degree weather in an attempt to protect themselves should the police utilize pepper sprays again.

Most recently though, on October 17, 2014 in Hong Kong, police
have been tearing down the barricades and tents set up by activists in Mong Kok.

Response to: Exposing Hidden Biases at Google to Improve Diversity

Bias has existed in countless forms throughout history, ever since the beginning of mankind. Sexism, racism--these are only a few examples of the many different brands of hatred falling under discrimination. Recently, however, more and more awareness has been raised about these social injustices as a response to the changing times.

Farhad Manjoo of the New York Times recently published an article on the underlying discrimination in the tech company Google. As expected, he uncovered a network of latent racism and sexism within the company's hiring and promoting practices. As stated in the article, "Men make up 83 percent of Google’s engineering employees and 79 percent of its managers." Despite the fact that men and women make up equal portions of the population, this statistic is not demonstrated in Google, a multinational corporation's, worker demographics. Furthermore, whites comprise approximately 61% of all workers, while Asians composed 30%, bi- or multiracials 4%, Hispanics 3%, Blacks 2%, and other minorities under 1%.

Quoted from the article, Google is "...unhappy about the firm's poor gender diversity." This, along with their implementation of workshops, will make a great impact in the tech industry. As one of the most well-known companies in the world, this might create a snowball effect, as other corporations are pressured to do the same in order to keep up with Google. With the publication of this article, would for example, Apple, Google's business rival, also be pressured to utilize such measures in order to keep up with Google?

Decades of scientific research has proven time and time again that diverse work environments tend to fare better than homogeneous ones. This leaves no room whatsoever for any excuses about diversity "not being necessary" in a workplace environment.

Computer programming has, for as long as our generation has known it, at least, been seen as a "manly" profession, a job suited for men rather than for women. It is, to this day, a field dominated by men. However, at its beginnings, computer programming actually used to be considered "women's work." Brenda D. Frink from Gender New writes, "As computer scientist Dr. Grace Hopper told a reporter, programming was 'just like planning a dinner. You have to plan ahead and schedule everything so that it’s ready when you need it…. Women are ‘naturals’ at computer programming.'” Of course, the first computer programmer was a woman as well--Ada Lovelace. Without her, Google might never have been made possible. How many in the tech industry actually know that? Of course, that fact has long been swept under the rug to elevate male programmers. This is merely one example of how groups outside of "white male" have been brushed off.

Thankfully, Google seems to be willing to improve its efforts on hiring a diverse set of employees, whether that is out of social pressure or honest intent. Manjoo states, "Dr. Welle points to research showing that we aren’t slaves to our hidden biases. The more we make ourselves aware of the role our unconscious plays in our decision-making, and the more we try to force others to confront their biases, the greater the chance we have of overcoming our hidden preferences." This is a big step forward, as one can only improve if they identify the problem.

Quoted from the New York Times, "Mr. Bock [of Google] saw all of these actions as evidence that the training was working. 'Suddenly you go from being completely oblivious to going, ‘Oh my god, it’s everywhere,’ ' he said." With a different viewpoint of how rampant sexism and racism is, hopefully, the measures Google implemented to raise awareness will have a long-term effect at Google, and subsequently, the tech industry.
